The rhodes intro for this song came to me in a dream. The "woah's" section may have come in the same dream. The song ended up being an expression of the doubt and displacement that comes with uncertainty about where one is going, or what is expected of him or her. The chorus contrasts with the sentiment that "Everyone always is where they're supposed to be." It's not necessarily a pessimistic song, but it does express feeling not quite stable or grounded in life, but resolving to "keep on searchin', keep doin' my best."
lyrics
I'm still on my way
Trying to find a place
Hungry for answers you can see it in my face
Headed down the highway
Back to the midwest
Takin' what I'm given, leavin' behind the rest
Woah, nobody ever is where they're Supposed to Be
Woah, somebody tell me where I'm Supposed to Be
Some people give up
Before they begin
Other people never stop
And wear themselves thin
I just do things my way,
Then I reassess
Taken what I'm given, leavin' behind the rest
Woah, nobody ever is where they're Supposed to Be
Woah, somebody tell me where I'm Supposed to Be
Thought I would meet you
Like we used to do
In that old hometown café
You're just as beautiful as I remember you
How I wanted to stay
Home's where the heart is,
At least that's what they say
I don't know where my home is, anyway
I'll just keep on searchin'
Keep doin' my best
Takin' what I'm given, leavin' behind the rest
Woah, takin' what I'm given, leavin' behind the rest
